Until I stop working as a marketer — so, never — I'll think that marketing is simple, not easy. Tactics change. The how changes. The whys don’t, because people don’t. Make time for these fundamentals.
I think your last line says it all, Bryant. Marketing works when there is some alignment between what you say repeatedly and what people experience repeatedly. That takes time, which is inconvenient in a culture obsessed with hacks, virality, and instant gratification.
Thanks, Neela. I think I picked that concept up from Godin when I was in the process of moving from editor into a community manager/content marketing role in 2010ish -- every interaction with a potential customer is marketing.
It's something I've kept in mind since. Also one of the reasons I've always just been (a slightly less -- can we still say politically incorrect, does that even mean anything anymore? -- version of) myself, so folks who do eventually work with/meet me won't get mental whiplash.

While I don’t always agree with you in the moment, you make me think about things from a different perspective. I’m not a marketer, and I would never write marketing articles because it’s not my area of expertise, but I also know there are blind spots and biases I don’t see.
So reading your perspective gives me another way of looking at things, especially because I think of you as an expert in your field.

As for agreeing, given I don't always agree with myself . . . ;) Feel free to poke holes, throw rocks or spitballs, or whatever on anything you disagree with. After I had a college professor write "Come see me, I can't read anymore" on a freshman paper; pretty hard to offend me with a critique.
