I'd tweak what you said yesterday slightly, I do think goals are important, but that goal isn't "going viral." Though we should learn and use as many techniques as possible to give ourselves maximum possible reach. Even then, yep, make it the best it can be and write for people -- those remain the foundation for success regardless.
